Welcome To Maheshwar

Maheshwar, a historic town on the banks of the sacred Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, offers a captivating blend of spirituality, history, and craftsmanship. It’s a town that feels like a journey back in time, largely due to the influence of the legendary Maratha Queen Ahilyabai Holkar, who made it the capital of the Malwa kingdom in the 18th century and adorned it with beautiful temples and public works

Things to do

Historical and Architectural Wonders

  • Ahilya Fort & Palace: This is the centerpiece of Maheshwar. Perched on a hill overlooking the Narmada, the fort and palace complex was the seat of Queen Ahilyabai’s rule. You can explore the courtyards, see her personal quarters, and admire a life-size statue of the queen on her throne. A part of the fort has been converted into a heritage hotel, allowing visitors to stay and experience the royal ambiance.

  • Maheshwar Ghats: The banks of the Narmada are a lively and spiritual hub. The main ghat, also known as Ahilya Ghat, is a place of deep spiritual significance. You can witness pilgrims taking a holy dip, priests performing rituals, and people offering prayers. A boat ride on the Narmada, especially during sunrise or sunset, provides a serene perspective of the temples and the fort.

  • Temples within the Fort: The fort complex itself is home to several beautiful temples. The Rajrajeshwar Temple is notable for its intricate stone carvings, while the Ahilyeshwar Temple is a testament to Maratha craftsmanship.

Cultural and Craft Experiences

  • Weaving Centers: Maheshwar is famous for its handwoven Maheshwari sarees. This tradition was revived by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar to provide employment to local women. You can visit weaving societies like the Rehwa Society to see the intricate process of creating these beautiful sarees, from the dyeing of the yarn to the final product. It’s a great place to buy an authentic Maheshwari saree as a souvenir.

  • Local Markets: The narrow lanes of Maheshwar’s markets are a treasure trove of local handicrafts, textiles, and religious items. It’s a great place to soak in the local atmosphere and pick up unique souvenirs.
